Ground to Sound.

For the performance Ground to Sound, a trailer mounted with various instruments was pulled across an area of approximately 1.5 hectares of former agricultural land that could be considered between use.

The wheels, the nature of the ground surface, and the participants influenced compositions. Each of these variables translated into different musical elements.

The mere act of pulling by each participant was to correlate with the surface.

Following, avoiding, or crossing both the traces of agricultural cultivation and the animal trails (desire lines) of deer, hares, moles, ants, or other roaming animals shaped compositions.

Ground to Sound was an attempt to find a deeply felt connection to the earth, stones, plants, and roots through sound and action, its execution similar to that of a ritual or divination.

An exploration of the meaning and significance of what lies beneath us; how we connect with it, or what separates us from it. Inspired by ideas, concepts, and scientific research on human efforts to either dig or leave the ground untouched, Ground to Sound attempted a question: What do we take away and what do we give back?
